Every day is different when working in care

The government is currently running a national campaign to encourage more people to work in adult social care. The focus of the campaign is that there is no typical day working in care – every day really is different!

Our care workers at Connect2Kent work as part of a team supporting people within Kent County Council’s registered care homes. They support a wide range of people including the elderly, adults with physical or learning disabilities, dementia and other conditions.

A role in care can involve supporting people with social and physical activities, helping with personal care such as showering and dressing and assisting with eating and drinking. Day centres provide a range of activities, meaning you could be taking people out for the day, helping with shopping, or even going swimming!

One of our support workers told us...

“I love working in care because it is so varied. I’ve got to know the people where I work and it is really rewarding seeing them join in activities and enjoy themselves. I’ve worked in residential units helping people with getting up and dressed, taking them for lunch and helping with personal care. I’ve also worked in day centres where we get to go out with service users and join in with things like bowling, which is great fun. It isn’t like work when you enjoy it so much”

You don’t need any specific qualifications to work in adult social care; what’s most important are your values and attitude. If you are the sort of person who is honest, kind and listens to and understands other people’s needs, then this could be the career for you. We are looking for the kind of people we would like to look after our own grandparents!

Have a think about the following questions. If you can answer yes to them, then please get in touch with us to discuss a career in social care!

  • Do you care about other people, their wellbeing and happiness?
  • Are you a good team player?
  • Are you kind and honest?
  • Do you have experience of caring for others?
  • Do you prefer working with a wide range of people to being stuck behind a desk?
  • Do you want a career where every day is different?
