Interview with an Interpreter
European Day of Languages aims to raise awareness of the importance of language learning, promote the diversity of Europe and encourage lifelong learning. To celebrate, we caught up with a couple of our Interpreters to give you an insight into their role.
Tell us a little about your job role
Interpreter #1: My role as an interpreter is to attend face-to-face meetings or over the telephone and interpret/convert one spoken language to another accurately and correctly.
Interpreter #2: My job role is to carry out face to face or over the phone interpreting assignments from Pashto, Dari, Farsi, Arabic, Urdu and Hindi into English and vice versa.
What is your favourite thing about being an interpreter with Connect2Kent?
Interpreter #1: The constancy of the work and approachability and support of C2k staff.
Interpreter #2: My favourite is the variety of languages available to carry out assignments and the travels to different locations.
Tell us a little about your experience and why you became an interpreter
Interpreter #1: Previously I worked with various agencies as an interpreter to utilise my skills as a speaker of languages other than English. I find working as an interpreter both rewarding and can be a good career choice.
Interpreter #2: I have other professional qualifications, but I have chosen to be an interpreter due to some personal reasons.
What is one piece of advice you’d give to someone considering becoming an interpreter with Connect2Kent?
Interpreter #1: You have to be organised, professional when dealing with customers and stick to your role as an interpreter.
Interpreter #2: I would urge them to be professional and punctual.
